An A23 battery (also written 23A or 23AE) is a small 12-volt alkaline cell used in some remotes, alarms, and other electronic devices. It is not the same as a D23 JIS automotive battery. Similar-looking code numbers do not establish battery equivalence.
What is an A23 battery?
The Energizer A23 datasheet identifies it as a 12V miniature alkaline battery, about 10.3 mm in diameter and 28.5 mm long, according to the Energizer A23 datasheet. Common cross-reference codes include MN21 and V23GA, but confirm the exact device manual before substituting another code.
Is A23 the same as D23 JIS?
No. A23/23A is a miniature electronic cell. D23 JIS is an automotive battery case size. For example, GS Yuasa lists its HJ-S55D23L as a 12V automotive auxiliary battery with a D23 JIS case and dimensions of 220 × 171 × 227 mm—far larger than an A23 cell, as shown in the GS Yuasa product specifications. They are not interchangeable.
Before buying, match the code printed on the old battery and the device maker’s specification. For a vehicle, check the exact year, trim, and market in the owner's manual and use a fitment source; do not use a miniature battery cross-reference list.
