Replacing the batteries in a BMW key fob might be difficult and time-consuming. There is a lot of information on the internet about how to do it, but many people find themselves lost in all of the different methods and options. This blog post will discuss everything you need to know about replacing the battery in your BMW key fob.

How to replace the battery in a BMW Key Fob?

Replacing the battery is easy and only takes about five minutes or less as long as you know the process for each type. Here are some steps to follow to perform this task.

2014 BMW Key Fob X3, X5, X6 Series:

Step 1: Remove the physical key from the key fob by pressing down the small button found on the side of the device. Slide out the metal key and set it aside.

Step 2: Locate the small access port on the key fob and use a small flat screwdriver to pop off the back cover.

Step 3: Once the back cover has been taken out, remove the dead battery gently with the help of the small screwdriver. Make sure to dispose of the old battery the proper way. No one likes accidentally throwing batteries in the trash that could explode and cause damage.

Step 4: Change the battery with a new CR2032 lithium battery cell by sliding it in the compartment. The side with the writing where the + sign is should be facing up. Make sure it snaps into place and is secure.

Step 5: Reattach the back cover and secure the two notches are inserted into the respective ports and snap them into place.

Step 6: Return the physical key back in the fob and test out the lock and unlock buttons to ensure they are working properly.

Similar steps can be followed for this key fob model by following these general guidelines.

Step 1: Remove the physical key from the key fob by pressing the small button found at the back of the fob to release the key.

Step 2: Remove the back cover by using a small flathead screwdriver to pry apart the fob's casing. Be careful in doing this as you don't want to break it.

Step 3: Gently remove the dead battery with the use of the screwdriver to pop it off.

Step 4: Slide in the new battery and make sure you follow the correct battery orientation. This key fob uses a CR2450 battery which can be found at most local electronic stores.

Step 6: Reattach the back cover and secure it by snapping it into place properly.

Step 7: Return the physical key back to the fob and run a test to make sure the new battery is functional.

It's not possible to replace the battery in this key fob. But, if you are thinking of saving from visiting a service center, the battery can be replaced in a more complex procedure. You may do this by cutting the case and inserting the new battery. This key fob uses a VL2020 battery. However, the manufacturer does not recommend this procedure as it may pose the risk of damaging the electronics of your key.

Reminder: Please note that not all these key fobs have a replaceable battery. One way to know if your key fob has a replaceable battery is by checking the back of the key fob. If it has a score cut at the center, then the battery in this fob is replaceable. If the back of the key fob is smooth with no cuts or indentions on the side, then you cannot open this key fob which means the battery is not replaceable.

How often should you change the key fob battery?

Most batteries in car key fobs will last between three and our years with normal use. Of course, the life of the battery will depend on how often you use your key fob and how you take care of it. If you are using the key fob often, then it may be best to change out your battery every other year to make sure that it stays well-functioning and fresh.

It is also ideal to change the battery as soon as the signs of a dying battery appear. If you press the button on your key fob and nothing happens, then there is a good chance that it needs to be replaced. This will avoid inconveniences such as having to unlock your car door with a key or not being able to lock the doors.

Conclusion

Maintaining your BMW in a tip-top shape means keeping up with all the little things like replacing the dead key fob battery every once in a while. It's not that difficult to do, and you can do it yourself to save some money as well. Make sure that you use the recommended battery for your key fob model. This will ensure that your key fob will perform the same as when you first got it.

Do not ignore changing the battery in your BMW key fob because you will regret it later. It is also ideal to keep a spare battery just in case you need to replace it.
